HMS Penelope


Launched in October 1935, the light cruiser HMS Penelope is seen here entering the Grand Harbour, Valletta Malta in March 1942. The Fort to the right is St Angelo (HMS St Angelo), showing shell damage after a recent aerial raid, and flying the Vice Admiral's flag. HMS Penelope was active in the Mediterranean, and after enduring substantial damage during a raid, became affectionatley known as HMS Pepperpot. She succumbed to a torpedo attack after leaving Naples bound for Anzio , and was lost with 417 officers and men in 1944.
